Holiday Style

2 Dec

Glisten,  sparkle & glam basically sum-up any holiday look. Your skin should glisten, your outfit should sparkle, & your overall look should tie both together for a glamorous outcome.  Beauty routine is up first:

Clinique

Everyone knows these cold winter months can be damaging to our skin.  Thus, it’s important to give your face a little extra TLC prior to any makeup application. Exfoliating is key- Get rid of all that dry, flakiness. It’s no secret I have an obsession with Clinique. Their skincare is never-fail for me so I recommend the Clinique Exfoliating Scrub (Sephora- $18.50). Purchase It!

KNOWWEAR

Follow up with your usual moisturizer/ primer routine. If you’ve read about makeup contouring then your next step will probably involve your contouring routine (I am so addicted & apply makeup this way everyday).  Next, it’s time to add the glitz with great holiday blush, eye product & lippy:

Beauty Banter

I am HIGHLY recommending all my readers to check out Beauty Banter & her advice on how to maximize your makeup with the NARS holiday collection. It sparkles & shimmers to add a special feel for the holiday season.

Moving on to the holiday wardrobe…

First, & foremost, it’s important that any key piece you choose make you feel beautiful, especially during the holidays. I am a huge advocate for sparkle, but with any “trend”, it’s important to mix with classic pieces as well. Here are a few sparkle & shine pieces that would be perfect when paired with more classic & neutral counterparts:

DKNY

This DKNY Sleeveless Dress with Allover Sequins (DKNY- $345.00) would be perfect when paired with black opaque tights & a black blazer for simple complimentary pieces.  Purchase It!

MICHAEL Michael Kors

This MICHAEL Michael Kors Sequin Front Tank (Nordstrom- $69.50), paired with a dark skinny jean & classic black heels would look stunning. Add a black open-front cardigan if you’ll be chilly or show off the racerback detail. Purcahse It!

Alice + Olivia

If the two previous hues were too bright for your taste, then this Alice + Olivia Asymmetric Sequined Dress (NET-A-PORTER- $600.00) is a bit more toned down while still adding the sparkle. Pair with a great bootie for an edgier look either with or without tights. Purchase It!

I am a firm believer that some sparkle is warranted for the holidays, but if you’re shying away from too much shimmer, look for some sequin accessories or heels that could help with the glitz without overdoing it.

Happy Holidays!

Beauty Workshop: Face Contouring

23 Nov

Contouring Diagram

One of my favorite sites, Beauty Banter, asked what new makeup tips or techniques we’re interested in. As a religious follower of this beauty blog,  my immediate reaction was face contouring! The concept has interested me for the past year, & while I know the basic tips & tricks of the concept, I’m dying to know more.

This sparked me to think back to when I first heard about face contouring last winter & how, at first thought, I figured I didn’t have the time on a daily basis to spend contouring my face (it just sounds so difficult, and somewhat painful). Luckily, I taught myself some quick & easy contouring looks that have totally changed the way I do my daily makeup routine, without hardly adding any additional time:

  1. My first piece of advice is to prime, prime, & prime after applying the usual moisturizer & SPF! I highly recommend Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (Sephora– $30.00).  The tube is gigantic, compared to most primers, & works wonders with a lesser amount than a cheaper brand. Priming your face will help keep makeup in-tact all day without the annoying & embarrassing smudges & smears. Purchase It!
  2. Concealer is incredibly useful when it comes to contouring when used for more areas than just under the eye: I prefer TEMPTU’s under-eye concealer (yes, even for more areas than just under my peepers) (Sephora– $28.00). Apply under the eyes, as usual, and also on the sides of your nose to make it appear thinner. Depending on your nose shape, you might want to try streaking the concealer straight down the top middle of your nose, instead of the sides. Making a “U” shape from under the eyes to down around the sides of your nose & back up is also suggested. Play with these three contouring suggestions to see what works best for your face. Purchase It!
  3. Next, I love to use a light foundation. Once again, I personally turn to Laura Mercier for her Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer & SPF 20, especially for this dry winter weather (Sephora– $42.00). The mixture is light & not at all cakey & it provides that extra amount of moisture that’s so important for healthy skin. Purchase It!
  4. I hate using to word “bronzer” for the contouring process, as you don’t want it to be too bronzed or shimmery. However, for the next step, I do use a bronzer that’s fairly close to my natural skin color (if you’re pale, try a mineral or powder makeup a few shades darker than your usual). I love the Hoola by Benefit Bronzer for contouring as it’s the perfect shade for my skin & is matte in color (Sephora– $28.00). Take your bronzer, or powder makeup, & apply to an angled brush. There are three great places to apply: Just below your cheekbones (fish-face it and swipe in the crease); in a half-moon shape right below your hairline on your forehead & at your jawline. Applying darker shades in these main places help keep your face looking slim & defined. Purchase It!
  5. Opposite to the bronzer, the next step requires a light hue and/or illuminator. Revlon makes a GREAT finishing power that I love to use for this step. It’s got just the right amount of shine. Revlon’s ColorStay Mineral Finishing Powder in Brighten (Walgreens- $14.00) should be applied right under brows, just under the “fish-faced” bronzer & on your forehead.  I use a small brush for the brows & a slightly larger angled brush for below the bronzer & a huge brush for a quick one-swipe on my forehead.
  6. Finally, I finish up with my usual beauty routine of blush, eyebrow gel, mascara & a lippy.

While the process seems daunting, it’s easy to figure out what works best for you with a few quick test-runs. You can streamline your contouring down to 3-5 minutes. Don’t feel like purchasing all the individual products I suggested? Try Smashbox’s Step-By-Step Contour Kit (Smashbox– $45.00). The trio palette provides a compact row of shades perfect for contouring. Purchase It!

UK Bans Dakota Fanning’s “Oh Lola!” Ad

9 Nov

The UK is usually known (to us Americans, anyway) for their racy photo shoots & laid-back attitude surrounding sex. This clearly wasn’t the case for Marc Jacobs’ Oh Lola! perfume ad featuring Dakota Fanning, as it has been banned in the UK:

Marc Jacobs

The new ad features Dakota “sitting provocatively with a perfume bottle between her legs”. Really? How many times have I seen Kate Moss’ nipples? Don’t get me wrong, I adore Kate & ALL her shots but this is more provocative than that? I don’t think so. One of the major issues the UK is having is how young Ms. Fanning looks (although they do recognize this was shot when she was 17 years old). I think the shot is racy but Dakota looks beautiful and I think it’s certainly not distasteful.

From the UK Ad’s Standards Authority: “…the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualize a child”.

Agree/ Disagree?

Girl Crush: Karlie Kloss

8 Nov

Doesn’t the title just say it all? I have “girl crushes” on models, celebrities, socialites, etc. & Karlie Kloss is one of my newest! I adore her. As an American high-fashion model & runway queen, Karlie will be one of the newest Angels walking the runway tomorrow night in the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Having been shot for Marc Jacobs, Dior, and Roberto Cavalli (just to name a few), the VS show will be a whole new level of gorgeous for Kloss.

Karlie Kloss for Dior

Wild hair, dark features & an over-sized pair of sunnies makes Karlie for Dior. I think this shot represents her talent as a high-fashion model but…

Karlie Kloss for Chloe

…this 2009 runway shot from Chloe’s RTW collection shows Kloss’ true beauty. With her high cheek-bones, flawless complexion & pale lip, Kloss is the essence of natural gorgeousness & I am so inspired!

Watch Kloss for the VS Fashion Show on November 29th airing on CBS.

Happy (Belated) Birthday, Anna Wintour!

7 Nov

In honor of Anna Wintour’s birthday last week, I was inspired to flip through some old Vogue covers. Growing up, I was always so inspired by Vogue, as I’m sure many of you were as well! Some of my favorites that I came across were:

Vogue

Claudia Schiffer’s 1989 cover for the mag. Between her hair, exposed shoulder & drop earrings, she is the essence of elegance & beauty. I absolutely love that the high-bun hairstyle is back “in”. It’s simple, easy & fun so take note.

Vogue

This 1991 cover featuring Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington & Cindy Crawford was issued to celebrate 75 years! All three ladies have graced many vogue covers so it was fitting they chose them for the cover. I adore Christy’s next-to-nothing makeup & Cindy’s full but tidy brows. Both super chic beauty trends!

Vogue

Who’s more inspirational than a princess? The 1997 cover of Princess Diana is perfect. Her dress is gorgeous, her skin & makeup flawless, making her the definition of beautiful!

Vogue

Gisele Bundchen’s 2000 cover showed just enough skin to make women every where hit the gym while still keeping Gisele tasteful & classy. What girl isn’t inspired by Gisele? I love the ease of the photo as cover shoots are normally more posed.

Vogue

I definitely saved the best for last with this 2003 Kate Moss cover. As you already know, I am in love with Kate. She entered the business as a scrawny awkward teenager and has since become one of the top models of our generation. This cover is perfect & goes against the normal “Vogue” grain with a dedication to music & art. Love, love love!

Happy Birthday, Anna! I hope we have many more years with you pouring your soul into our beloved Vogue magazine!

Gift Sets Aren’t Just For Giving…

27 Oct

…They’re for trying out new products for yourself too!

One of my favorite things about the holiday season are all the cute little gift sets that pop up, and not for gift-giving reasons.  Stores like Sephora carry some of the best sets that you shouldn’t give away! Beauty sets are a GREAT way to test a new product before committing to the real deal & can save you a lot of money (especially if you  don’t end up liking your gift set tester). Even better, some gift sets are coming full-sized but still remain a fraction of the price of the individual items. Since it seemingly gets earlier each year, stores are already displaying their gift sets for purchase! So far, some of my favorite buy-to-keep gift sets are:

Too Faced

Too Faced On The Prowl set is a four-piece set featuring a lippy, primer, kabuki brush (great for loose-powder/ mineral foundation & bronzer application) & their complexion kit with bronzer, blush & powder. Too Faced products are popular for their fun packaging but also have a great reputation for flawless application (Sephora- $26.00 with a $75.00 value). Purchase It!

Clinique

Clinique Fall In Love With Colour set offers a makeup bag, mascara, two lippies, makeup remover & eye palette. When you purchase Clinique, you know you’re getting amazing products that are all 100% allergy-tested. You could easily carry this whole set with you for on-the-go touch-ups (Sephora- $42.00 with an $83.00 value)! Purchase It!

LORAC

LORAC  Shimmer & Shine Collection is the ultimate form of girly with neutral but feminine colors. This set offers three eye shadows, eye primer, lip gloss, mascara & a cute black bag to keep it all in. LORAC’s eye primer is reason enough to treat yourself to this awesome set. It keeps eye makeup in tact all day and night without smearing or creasing (Sephora- $37.00 with a $117.00 value). Purchase It!

Dior

Dior made this lovely Miss Dior Cherie gift set that includes perfume, shower gel & moisturizer all in the famous Miss Dior scent. Again, it all comes in a cute little bag for convenience. I love testing new perfumes and having a ton available at any given time for any given mood so the idea of a perfume gift set is super enticing (Sephora- $83.00). Purchase It!

L'OCCITANE

L’OCCITANE Protecting Shea Butter Collection is the perfect set for the upcoming dry, winter weather. The set comes with lip balm, soap, shower cream, foot cream, & hand cream. L’OOCITANE products are sans a lot of bad chemicals & parabens so you can feel good about using them (Sephora- $36.00 with a $52.00 value)! Purchase It!

Now, don’t get me wrong, the holidays are definitely the time of giving, but when it comes to saving money on a new product you’re dying to try, I suggest seeing if you can purchase a gift set for yourself to have a few uses to try it out.

Halloween Makeup

25 Oct

I’ve clearly got Halloween on the brain (see Costume Jewelry) so I decided to check out some makeup styles for the holiday. I came across some awesome & inspirational makeup ideas from MAC that I’m fascinated by:

MAC Cosmetics

“Batgirl” is self explanatory.

MAC Cosmetics

This look is totally suitable for a doll costume with the rosy cheeks and round eyes.

MAC Cosmetics

I adore this look for a devil costume or some sort of “fire and ice” feel.

MAC Cosmetics

This look takes a little more talent & creativity but would clearly look awesome paired with a fairy costume.

MAC Cosmetics

Don’t just be Lady Gaga for Halloween, be one of her biggest hits- Poker Face. This would be super cute with a Queen of Hearts costume, as well.

MAC Cosmetics

I envision this look with an Evil Queen type costume. The detailing is incredible & would definitely compliment the dark costume.

MAC Cosmetics

This robot-inspired look would be incredibly easy to make and would add a ton of character to your costume.

MAC Cosmetics

I can picture this pattern with either a snake or leopard  costume.

MAC Cosmetics

This look would work with a spider costume, or a darker version of Little Miss Muffet. The spider is super detailed so it may take a little extra artistic talent.

MAC Cosmetics

For a zebra or cat costume, this would be incredibly detailed but easy if you had the time to create it!

While it’s easy to get inspired by these looks, they might be difficult to create. You can log-on to MAC to book an artist or call your local MAC counter to see if anyone could help you recreate any of these looks. On their website, you can also find all the makeup needed to make all these looks. Get inspired & be creative!

Inspiration

23 Oct

Inspiration is an important word when it comes to personal style. While, for my personal closet, I tend to choose more classic pieces, I am always inspired by the wild looks that come prancing down runways & are seen in over-the-top photo shoots. As most of us do, I have three models who always seem to inspire me whether it be on the runway, walking down the street (thanks, paparazzi) or in a shoot:

Kate Moss

Arguably one of the most sought-after models of all time, Kate never ceases to put me in jaw-dropping awe.

Kate Moss

Between the beachy waves & next-to-no makeup, I adore the above picture for its most realistic portrayal of natural femininity.

Jessica Stam

From Victoria’s Secret to Christian Dior, Jessica Stam has graced the runways with her statuesque figure & perfect skin.

Jessica Stam

Jessica’s glossy pout, sleek pony & smoky eye are the definition of high-fashion.

Chanel Iman

Similarly to what I love about Kate, Chanel looks her best when she’s fresh-faced and natural, and she’s made a living out of it!

Chanel Iman

With just a swipe of eyeliner on her top lid, Chanel shows how the simplest touch of makeup can make all the difference.

My hope as the author & editor of this blog is to provide inspiration through fashion, beauty & decor to show that even the most outrageous trends can be used for personal street style with a little confidence & a lot of love.
